Kendal was born in Rhodesia on 12 June 1928. She attended Stand Grammar School in Whitefield, Lancashire and studied medicine at the University of Manchester. After qualifying, Kendal held junior positions at MRI, Crumpsall Hospital Manchester, Manchester Jewish Hospital and Bury General Hospital before joining HM Forces in 1954. By 1970 Kendal was practicing in New York.
