Melland, descended from the Melland family of Bakewell doctors, was born at Alport, Derbyshire, on 28 January 1818. He studied medicine as an apprentice at Sheffield, and from 1839 at Manchester and Paris. Melland was resident surgeon at MRI in 1841 before settling in general practice. He was also surgeon to the Chorlton-on-Medlock Dispensary and later to Chorlton Union. Melland practiced for many years in Manchester, only retiring at the turn of the century, when he was about 83. Melland died on 18 January 1911. Two of his sons, Brian and Charles Herbert Melland (see above) also became doctors in Manchester.
