Hughes studied medicine at Owens College and St Bartholomew's. He held house positions at Wolverhampton General Hospital and MRI before being appointed lecturer in orthodontics at the University of Manchester and honorary dental surgeon at Manchester Dental Hospital. Hughes died on 19 October 1958 aged eighty.
