Mays was born in Lincoln on 30 May 1923 and gained his medical education at the University of Manchester, where he was awarded a number of scholarships and prizes. After qualifying, Mays held resident appointments at Park Hospital Davyhulme and Salford Royal Hospital. In 1953 he was appointed surgical registrar to Ashton General Hospital, and the following year was orthopaedic registrar. Mays later settled in general practice in New Mills, Stockport, and was part time anaesthetist to Tameside and Glossop Hospitals.
