Kenworthy studied medicine at St Andrew's University and the University of Glasgow, and later at the Royal Manchester School of Medicine. In 1855 he applied for the position of physician's clerk at MRI but was unsuccessful. Kenworthy later settled in general practice in Hollinwood, Manchester, and was medical officer for Chadderton District, Oldham Union.
