Metcalfe was born in Winnipeg, Canada, on 7 March 1921. He gained his medical education at the University of Manchester where he won many prizes and scholarships and was demonstrator of anatomy in 1952. After qualifying, Metcalfe held resident appointments at MRI, Crumpsall Hospital Manchester and Salford Royal Hospital. In 1960, Metcalfe was appointed consultant general surgeon to Blackburn and District Hospitals Group. He was also examiner in surgery for the BDS and the General Nursing Council. Metcalfe was a fellow of MMS from 1949, and a member of the Section of Surgery. He was an associate member of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and a member of Blackburn Medical Society. In 1960, Metcalfe was given the honour of being made Hunterian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons. Metcalfe died on 17 August 1966, aged only 45 years.
