McKeand was a pupil of Thomas Fawdington. He was a surgeon in Manchester from the 1840s. By the 1860s he was surgeon to the Royal Manchester Eye Hospital, and had become famous for his treatment of the eye. He was still living in 1879 and was also surgeon to Southport Cottage Eye Hospital.
