Martin was one of a family of doctors who practised in Little Hulton over many years. He gained his medical education at Royal Manchester School of Medicine. For forty years he was medical officer and public vaccinator to Walkden District, Barton-upon-Irwell Union, and was also certifying factory surgeon and police surgeon. Martin was later a justice of the peace for Lancashire County. He was a member of Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society and was surgeon to the Bridgewater and Little Hulton Collieries. Martin was the father of Thomas Whittle, William Whittle and William Young Martin junior. He died on 3 June 1911, age 68.
