Lomas trained at MRI and Pine Street Medical School Manchester, where he attended lectures in 1833-4. He was appointed house surgeon at MRI in 1836 but resigned in 1838 after charges of misconduct. Lomas later settled in general practice in Cheetham Hill, Manchester. Lomas also gave lectures in anatomy and physiology at Chatham Street Medical School, Manchester, in 1850.
