O'Grady graduated from the National University of Ireland in 1941. He worked at Crumpsall Hospital and Monsall Hospital, and in 1948 took the DPH from the University of Manchester. He worked as an assistant school medical officer for Manchester Council and as a medical officer of health for Lancashire County Council. At the time of his death he was a divisional medical officer for Lancs County Council.
