Samuel Maddock, b [1727?]

Maddock was an apprentice to an apothecary in Manchester in the early eighteenth century. He was an ensign (acting as surgeon and apothecary) in the Manchester Regiment, the only English Jacobite force, who surrendered to Cumberland during the failed rebellion of 1745. Maddock turned the King's evidence against his associates to save his life, many men were convicted. He was aged about 18 at the time, and much of his evidence was thought to be perjury.
