Administrative / Biographical History

Israels was born in Manchester and qualified in medicine from the University of Manchester in 1932. In 1935 he was appointed assistant director of the department of clinical investigation and research at MRI. In 1938-40 he was a Foulerton research fellow of the Royal Society investigating bone marrow changes in blood diseases. After war service he returned to MRI in 1946 as assistant director of department of haematology. In 1948 he was appointed a consultant physician at UMH and in 1962 be came director of department of clinical haematology. In 1970 he was appointed professor of clinical haematology at the University of Manchester. From 1964-9 he was dean of postgraduate studies at the University. In 1971 Israels was president of Manchester Medical Society.
