Martin gained his medical education at Manchester and Glasgow Universities. He was honorary assistant surgeon to Bury Infirmary before being appointed honorary gynaecological and obstetrics surgeon there. Martin was as consultant obstetrician to Bury County Borough and was visiting obstetrician to Moorland Infirmary, Rawtenstall and Jericho Institute, Bury. Martin was a member of MMS and of the North of England Obstetrical Society. He was also a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.
