Maguire was educated at Manchester Grammar School and Owens College Manchester, and had a distinguished academic career. He was physician to the Manchester Southern Hospital, pathologist to MRI and assistant lecturer in pathology at Owens College. Maguire then settled in London and joined the staff of the St Mary's and Brompton Hospitals. He became an expert in disorders of the respiratory tract and delivered the Harveian Lectures in 1900 on this subject. Maguire died on 12 November 1915 aged 58.
