Mills gained her medical education at the University of Manchester. She then settled in general practice in Rochdale, Lancashire, where she became assistant medical officer of health and deputy principal school medical officer. Mills married A.H. Heyworth but retained her maiden name for her professional work. She retired in the 1960s.
