Karfoot studied medicine at Manchester before being appointed house surgeon at Bolton Royal Infirmary. He was later senior resident anaesthetist at Preston Royal Infirmary and anaesthetic registrar at Crumpsall Hospital Manchester before being appointed consultant anaesthetist at Barrow and Furness Hospital Group.
