Solomon Herbert d. 1940

Herbert was born in Austria and studied at the University of Vienna, and later at Manchester. He held appointments in London and Wales, before returning to Manchester in 1915 as assistant medical officer at the Consumption Hospital. Herbert's field of interest was psychotherapy and he is believed to be the first qualified psychoanalyst in the Manchester area. He later built up a successful private practice in the city. He was medical referee to the Board of Control in Manchester. He was the author of several books including The first principles of evolution (1913), Introduction to the physiology and psychology of sex(1917) and Fundamentals in sexual ethics (1923). He was also a founder of Manchester Fabian Society.
