Pullan studied physics at Leeds University and gained a B.Sc in 1958 and a Ph.D in 1961. He worked in the medical physics department at St George's Hospital, London. In 1966 he came to the University of Manchester as lecturer in medical biophysics and in 1973 he was elected to the chair of medical biophysics.
