Hughes, affectionately known as Gron, was born in Llandrindod Wells on 8 January 1915. He was educated at Swansea Grammar School, Liverpool University and London School of Hygiene. After qualifying, Hughes held house appointments and was in general practice for a short time before being called into the RAMC. After the war, Hughes specialized in occupational medicine and was medical officer for the Railway Executive. In 1952 Hughes was appointed medical officer to North West Gas, a position he held until his death. From 1958 Hughes was also honorary lecturer in the Department of Occupational Health at the University of Manchester. He served on the Occupational Health Committee of BMA from 1954 until 1965. Hughes died on 4 September 1974.
