Hughes, the son of Dr Hughes of Ashton-under-Lyne [probably William Hugh Hughes (junior)]., studied medicine at the University of Manchester. He was house surgeon at MRI before settling in general practice in Lymm, Cheshire. Hughes was later anaesthetist at Warrington Infirmary and was assistant to the transfusion service in Altrincham Hospital. He was also police surgeon and lecturer for the British Red Cross.
