Hunt was born in Preston on 12 January 1856, and was educated at Preston Grammar School and Owens College. Known as Bob, he was physician's assistant, house surgeon and house physician at MRI and medical officer to Monsall Fever Hospital. In 1889 Hunt was appointed honorary surgeon at Blackburn and East Lancashire Infirmary. He held this post until 1910 when he was made honorary consulting surgeon. Hunt was also certifying factory surgeon, medical referee and public vaccinator. He was a famous rugby player, playing rugby first for the Preston Grasshoppers, then for Manchester, Lancashire and Yorkshire. Between 1880 and 1882 Hunt played rugby for England, one year he was on the team with two of his brothers. Hunt died on 19 March 1913 from a bout of pneumonia he had caught while playing golf.
