Holland trained at King's College and St George's Hospital in London. He was resident then house apothecary at MRI in the 1840s. He then entered general practice before being appointed resident medical officer at Surrey County Lunatic Hospital. Sometime in the early 1850s Holland was elected superintendent of the Prestwich Lunatic Asylum, a position in which he is said to have distinguished himself.
