    • 3 volumes Condition: Good. No worm damage, but corners soiled by thumbing. Impression: Similar to 16100.c.16 but possibly earlier. Illustrations: Double-page frontispiece on ff. 1b-2a. Two inset sumizuri woodcuts on every page, within double-line frames, accompanying each poem; one depicting the poet himself, the other a scene associated with the poem. Batsu on fol. 60b ends with the artist's signature: 武州江城之下久大和繪師 / 菱河吉兵衞師宣. Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal, Kan [?] [?] 觀□□, on first page of each maki, and small circular seal, Ōba 大場, on last page of maki 上 and 下.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Hosokawa Fujitaka 細川藤孝, called Yūsai 幽齋, warrior and man of letters, 1534-1610. Text revised and supplemented by NAKANOIN Michikatsu 中院通勝, 1556-1610. Illustrator: HISHIKAWA Moronobu 菱川師宣,1618-94. Imprint: [Edo] , Urokogataya, Enpō 6, 1678. Kanki on fol. 60b reads: 延寶六年午正月吉辰日 / 大傳馬町參町目 / 鱗形屋新板. Description: 3 kan, 3 satsu, in a buckram box. 26.9 x 18.6 cm. Renewed covers of modern yellow-brown paper, with renewed title slips. Manuscript gedai: 百人一首像讃抄. Edition: First edition, followed by further dated editions in Tenna 3 (1683), Genroku 5 (1692) and Enkyō 3 (1746). Contents: Text of the waka anthology Hyakunin isshu 百人一首, with brief lives of the poets and commentary by Hosokawa Yūsai, revised and augmented by Nakanoin Michikatsu.
