    • 2 volumes Condition: Very good. No worm damage and few soiled leaves. Impression: Atozuri, from blocks showing considerable evidence of wear. Illustrations: Two sequences of sumizuri illustrations. (1) 30 large woodcuts occupying two-thirds of the page, 17 in maki 上, 13 in maki 下, closely modelled on the illustrations in Ise monogatari taisei 伊勢物語大成 (see no. 288). Woodcut on mikaeshi of maki 上 is a portrait of poetess Ise; on mikaeshi of maki 下 a portrait of Ariwara no Narihira 在原業平. (2) Small vignettes in top third of each page illustrating scenes from Genji kasen eshō 源氏歌仙繪抄. Seals of ownership: Small square red seal (inkoku), 柳生大寺蔵 (?), on last page of both maki. Manuscript notes: Interlinear textual notes and emendations in red ink on ff. 8-21 of maki 上.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Unknown. Imprint: Edo, Izumoji Izuminojō, n.d. [late-17th or early 18th century]. Kanki on fol. 76a of maki 下 reads: 江戸日本橋南一町目出店 / 出雲寺和泉掾. Description: 2 kan, 2 satsu, in a box. (Maki 上) ff. [1] (mikaeshi), 1-9, 10 / 15 (十ノ十五), 16-29, 30 / 40 (卅ノ四十), [1]; (maki 下) ff. [1] , 41-54, 55 / 65 (五十五ノ六十五), 66-76. 26.7 x 18.9 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 24.1 x 17.6 cm. Single-line borders, with horizontal rule dividing upper one-third from lower two-thirds of each page. No fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text, with printed furigana and kutōten. 13 lines to page (main text), variable no. of characters to line. Original mid-blue covers, with printed title slips on left. Gedai: Shinchū e-iri (tsunogaki) Ise monogatari kaisei 新註繪入 (角書) 伊勢物語改成. Hashiragaki: (upper part) Genji kasen eshō 源氏哥仙絵抄; (lower part) Ise monogatari kaisei 伊勢物語改成 + folio no. Edition: An undated edition, reprinted from an earlier edition in 3 kan (3 satsu) published by Izutsuya Chūemon 井筒屋忠右衞門 (Edo) and Daimonjiya Shichirōbe 大文字屋七郎兵衞 (Kyōto) in Genroku 11 元禄十一年 (1698). That edition and the present reprint both contain 13 lines to the page. Contents: Text of Ise monogatari 伊勢物語, with interlinear explanatory notes identical to those in Ise monogatari eshō 伊勢物語繪抄. The Ise text is accompanied in the upper third of each page by text and illustrations of Genji kasen eshō 源氏歌仙繪抄. Short biographical notes on the poets Ise and Ariwara no Narihira are printed above their portraits on mikaeshi of maki 上 and 下.
