    • 1 volume Condition: Minor worm damage in places, otherwise very good. Impression: Variable. Sharp and clear for the most part, but with some blurred and fuzzy characters which may be due more to over-inking than to worn type. Seals of ownership: Two oblong seals, one red, one black, on first page of each maki.

Scope and Content

Variant title: Zōkō ryōgan shukan 増廣龍龕手鑑 [増広竜龕手鑑]. Author/compiler: Xingjin 行均, Chinese monk, Liao period. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [c. Genna period, 1615-24] . No colophon. Description: 8 kan, formerly in 8 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. 27.8 x 19.8 cm. Fukurotoji. Movable type. Printing frame 23.8 x 17.9 cm. Single-line borders with fishtail design on hanshin. Vertical rules between columns. Kanbun text without kunten. 10 lines to page, 4 main characters to line with explanatory notes below each of these characters, in two columns of smaller script. Original covers missing, hence no title slips or gedai. Title from naidai. Alternative title, Zōkō ryōgan shukan 増廣龍龕手鑑, appears at head of maki 6 only. Hashiragaki: Ryōgan maki 1 (etc.) 龍龕巻一 (等) + folio no. Book bound in half-leather, western style. Red seal: Sen'yūji betsuin Unryūin jōjū 泉涌寺別院雲龍院常住. Black seal: Rikyōbō zō 理教房藏. Edition: The only pre-Meiji Japanese edition of this work so far recorded. Based on a Korean edition of unknown date. Contents: Dictionary of character forms, arranged under radical elements and tones, listing old and new, standard and non-standard forms. 26, 430 chracters included. Especially strong in characters used in Buddhist literature. Text preceded by a Chinese preface by the monk Zhiguang 智光. Tone headings for each radical printed inkoku (white on black).
