    • 1 volume Condition: Almost pristine. Negligible worm damage, neatly repaired. Impression: From unworn type, sharp and clear. Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal, Wagaku kōdansho 和學講談所, seal of the centre for wagaku studies set up by the bakufu at Edo in 1793.

Scope and Content

Alternative reading of title: Henjō hakki seireishū. Variant title: Shōryōshū 性靈集 [性霊集]. Author/compiler: Kūkai 空海, known as Kōbō Daishi 弘法大師, 774-835. Compiler and editor: Shinzei 眞濟, daisōjō 大僧正 of Shingon sect, 800-60. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [Keichō period, c. 1600-15] . No colophon. Description: 10 kan, formerly in 3 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (Satsu 1) maki 1-5; (satsu 2) maki 6-8; (satsu 3) maki 9-10. 27.1 x 20.2 cm. Fukurotoji. Movable type. Printing frame 22.9-23.2 x 16.9 cm. Double-line borders all round. Vertical rules between columns. 'Flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text without kunten or reading marks. 9 lines to page, 28 characters to line. Buff front cover, old but not original, of satsu 1 only, without title slip. Manuscript gedai in an early-Edo hand: Shōryōshū 性靈集自一至五. Title from naidai. Hashiragaki: Shōryōshū 性靈集 + maki no. + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: Undated movable type edition, assigned by Kokatsujiban no kenkyū to Keichō period. Preceded by two pre-Edo editions (Kōya-ban dated Shōka 2, 1258, and an undated Negoro-ban), and by a dated movable type edition of Keichō 19 (1614) published at Kyōto. There was also another undated kokatsuji edition (7 lines to page, 14 characters to line) of Keichō / Genna period, as well as a blockprint published at Kōyasan 高野山 in Kan'ei 3 寛永三年, 1626. Contents: A collection of Chinese poems, letters, inscriptions, vows and memorials by Kūkai, compiled probably during his lifetime between 827 and 835, but put in order and issued by his disciple Shinzei 眞濟, 800-60.
