    • 7 volumes Condition: Some stains, soiled corners and minor worm damage (repaired) in most maki, otherwise generally good. Impression: An early impression from little-worn blocks. Illustrations: A total of 58 sumizuri illustrations, two of them (in maki 1 and 3) double-page mihiraki, distributed as follows: (maki 1) 10; (2) 9; (3) 8; (4) 7; (5) 7; (6) 9; (7) 8. Artist not named, but in Kohan shōsetsu sōgashi 古版小説挿画史 Mizutani confidently assigns the work to Yoshida Hanbē 吉田半兵衞 in his formative years. Seals of ownership: One red seal in an oblong oval frame, Zanka shooku 殘花書屋 (seal of Togawa Zanka 戸川殘花), and one square red seal, Hinnan 賓南, on first page of each maki.

Scope and Content

Variant title: Kyō miyage 京土産. Author/compiler: Now attributed to Asai Ryōi 淺井了意. Author previously unidentified. Imprint: [Kyōto] , Yamaguchi Ichirōbē, Enpō 6, 1678. Kanki on fol. 30b of maki 7 reads: 延寶六戊午年正月吉日 / 東洞院通六角下ル町 / 山口市郎兵衛板. Description: 7 kan, 7 satsu, in a wooden box. (Maki 1) ff. 33; (2) ff. 28; (3) ff. 33; (4) ff. 19; (5) ff. 28; (6) ff. 33; (7) ff. 30. 26.5 x 18.8 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 20.8 x 17 cm. (average). Single-line borders. No fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text, with printed furigana, dakuten and kutōten. 12 lines to page in maki 1 and maki 2, ff. 1-25b, thereafter 13 lines to page; 21-23 characters to line. Original mid-blue covers, with original printed title slips remaining on satsu 2-7, most of them damaged. Gedai: E-iri (tsunogaki) Kyō miyage 繪入 (角書) 京土産. Title from mokurokudai and naidai at head of text in each maki. Hashiragaki: [no title] , maki no. + folio no. only. Edition: Second edition closely following the first, published in the previous year (Enpō 5, 1677). The only other pre-modern edition, according to Nihon koten bungaku daijiten 日本古典文学大辞典, was published in Ōsaka with re-titled gedai, Yamashiro meishoki 山城名所記, Hōreki 13 (1763). Contents: A traveller's guide to places of interest (historic sites, temples, shrines, bridges, notable scenery, etc.) in and around Kyōto, as related by the monk Dekisai. This work is considered by Nihon koten bungaku daijiten 日本古典文学大辞典 to be comparable with Nakagawa Kiun's Kyō warabe 京童 (q. v.).
