  • Physical Description
    • 1 volume Condition: Good, apart from some worm damage in maki 中. Cropped at upper edge. Impression: Sharp and clear; little sign of block wear. Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal of Sir Ernest Satow (different from his usual seal, with smaller characters) on first page of each maki. Also a small square red seal, Tenzan 天山 or Naisan (Uchiyama) 内山, on last page of each maki, in intaglio (inkoku 陰刻). Manuscript notes: Two notes, both in similar terms describing briefly the contents of the work, written on slips of paper pasted on the mikaeshi and after fol. 21 of maki 上, ending with the following phrase: 明徳年間凢四百七十九年 (i. e. ''''479 years after the Meitoku period''''). The notes must therefore date from c. 1870.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Unknown. Imprint: N.p., Kan'ei 9, 1632. Kanki on fol. 23b of maki 下 reads: 寛永九年壬申季冬吉日刋行. Description: 3 kan, 3 satsu, bound in 1 vol. (western style). (Maki 上) ff. 21; (中) ff. 29; (下) ff. 23. 26.4 x 18.5 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 22.5-23 x 17.8 cm. Double-line borders, with fishtail design on hanshin. Katakana-majiri text with printed furigana, kutōten and dakuten. 12 lines to page, 24-27 characters to line. Mid-brown front cover, early-Edo period (colour rubbed), of maki 上 only, within modern western style half-leather binding. Renewed title slip with handwritten gedai (late-Edo or early Meiji period) : Meitokuki jō 明徳記 上. Naidai and gedai identical. Hashiragaki: Meitokuki jō 明徳記 上 (chū 中, ge 下) + folio no. Edition: The first blockprinted edition of this work, following the three movable type editions of Keichō 19, Genna 3 and Kan'ei 1. This seihan edition appears to be modelled on Or.59.b.32, although there are differences in the form of both kanji and kana, and it is certainly not a kabusebori from the latter. Contents: A war narrative (senki monogatari 戦記物語) describing the revolt of Yamana Ujikiyo 山名氏清 (Meitoku no ran 明徳の乱), quelled by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1391, and its aftermath.
