    • 2 volumes Condition: Physically good, with negligible worm damage, though the appearance of the printed page is somewhat marred by obtrusive multicoloured ten (see below). Printed text of maki 6, ff. 22-23 and maki 13, fol. 12, missing and replaced in manuscript. Impression: Type shows distinct signs of wear in places. Seals of ownership: Three red seals, one square (inkoku) and two oblong, on first page of each alternate maki: (1) Takusai 濯齋; (2) Takusai zōshoin 濯齋藏書印; (3) Ryokuseidō toshoshō 綠靜堂圖書章 (seal of Sugihara Shinsai 杉原心齋). Manuscript notes: Copious marginal notes in black, red and green, in a late-Edo hand. Extensive sidelining and kutōten in a variety of colours: red, pink, mauve, green, yellow and two shades of blue.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Du Yu 杜預, writer of commentary. Imprint: N.p ,n.d. [Keichō 17 (1612) or earlier, 慶長十七年以前刊] . No colophon. See notes under Edition below. Description: 30 kan, formerly in 15 satsu, now rebound in 2 large vols. western style. 29.4 x 20.4 cm. Fukurotoji. Movable type. Printing frame 22.1 x 17.8 cm. Double-line borders all round. Vertical rules between columns. 'Flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text without printed kunten. (For reading marks of various kinds, see under manuscript notes below.) 8 lines to page (large characters), 16 lines (small characters), 17 characters to line. No original covers retained within modern western style half-leather binding, hence no title slips nor gedai. Title from naidai. Hashiragaki: Saden 左傳 + maki no. + folio no. Edition: Movable type edition datable to Keichō 17 (1612) or earlier, by analogy with a copy of the same edition illustrated in Ashikaga gakkō zenpon zuroku 足利学校善本図録, pl. 36-8. This has a manuscript shikigo signed and dated as follows: 慶長十七年壬子閏十月廿七日庠主寒松叟誌焉 (see Kokatsujiban no kenkyū, p. 360). As well as this edition, Kokatsujiban no kenkyū records three variants of another undated movable type edition of the Keichō period, probably emanating from Eizan Getsuzōbō 叡山月藏坊. Contents: Du Yu's edition of the Zuozhuan 左傳 or Chunqiu Zuo-shi zhuan 春秋左氏傳, combining the 経 and the 伝 texts, and adding his own commentary. (Spring and Autumn Annals of the Lu 魯 State.).
