    • 2 volumes Condition: Very good. Minimal worm damage in maki 下. Impression: Mostly clear and sharp, but with some evidence of damaged type. Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal, Hōrei bunko 寶玲文庫 (collection of Frank Hawley) on first page of maki 上 and 下. Red octagonal seal, Eison 永尊, printed inkoku on last page of each maki.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Hata Sōha 秦宗巴, 1550-1607, physician and bibliophile, gō 号: Ryūan 立安 and Jumyōin 壽命院. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [Keichō period, later than Keichō 6 (1601), date of batsu quoted below] . This batsu, recording date of completion of the work, contains the same date and signature (Yasokusō Sonen) as no. 433 above, but in this case the batsu is complete. It reads: 此抄者壽命院立安法即 (ママ) [ = 印] 淩醫家救瘵 (ママ) [ = 瘵] 之暇廣 / 見遠聞而漸終篇予披覧最奇之餘揮短毫聊 / 錄事状耳 / 慶長第六辛丑孟冬九日 也足叟素然. Description: 2 kan, 2 satsu. (上) ff. 96; (下) ff. 53. 27.7 x 19.9 cm. Fukurotoji. Movable type. Printing frame 23 x 18 cm. Single-line borders with 'flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin. Katakana-majiri text without kunten. 12 lines to page, 18-26 characters to line. Vermilion covers, old but not original, ornamented with rhomboid design, faintly embossed. Title slips of old paper on left, with handwritten gedai in sōsho: Tsurezure shō jō (ge) 徒然抄 上 (下). No naidai. Hashiragaki: 徒抄 上 (下) + folio no. In a modern chitsu case of silk brocade. Edition: Kokatsujiban no kenkyū lists 7 movable type editions of this work, Keichō to Kan'ei period, of which only the first contains a printed kanki, dated Keichō 9, 1604. The present copy belongs to the second of the six undated editions (無刊記本第二種). The font of type used in these editions differs markedly from that used in printing BL Or.59.b.29. Contents: The earliest known commentary on Kenkō's celebrated zuihitsu work Tsurezuregusa 徒然草, written in or before Keichō 6, 1601 (date of batsu).
