Scope and Content

Variant title: Rekidai meisho yōron 歷代名書要論. Author/compiler: Unknown Chinese author. Text revised for publication by Huang Ao 黄鍪 and Huang Yue 黄鉞. Imprint: [Kyōto ?] , Yamada Rokuzaemon, Kanbun 4, 1664. Kanki on fol. 83b reads: 寛文四甲辰暦三月吉旦 / 山田六左衛門刋. Description: 1 kan, 1 satsu, rebound in 1 vol. western style. ff. 4 (preface), 1-3 (序次), 4-83 (本文). 26.2 x 16.5 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 20.4 x 14.4 cm. (average). Double-line borders. Single white fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text, with printed okurigana and kaeriten. 10 lines to page, 21 characters to line. Renewed blue front cover of former satsu 1 only, with embossed hexagonal pattern. Renewed title slip with manuscript gedai: 内閣祕傳字府. Title from gedai and mokurokudai. Naidai at head of text: Rekidai meisho yōron 歷代名書要論. Kōjo on ff. 81-83 is headed: Chūsho hippō 中書筆法. Hashiragaki: folio number only. Original Chinese preface on first 4 folios, signed by Chen Tong 陳桐 and dated 隆慶二年 (1568). Contents: Japanese reprint of a Chinese manual of calligraphy based on the work of noted calligraphers of the past, with large-scale reproductions of individual kanji.
