    • 1 volume Condition: Excellent. Impression: Shozuri or near. Seals of ownership: Octagonal British Museum stamp, probably 18th century: MVSEVM BRITANNICVM, on fol. 1a. Manuscript notes: A book from the Kaempfer Collection, with Sloane's pressmark Pr: Or: 128 and the words 'Tonic Dict. [ionary] ' written on the title slip. A note pasted on the front cover reads: 'A Chinese Japanese Dictionary, arranged according to the Iro fa or Syllabary of the Japanese. ' Also, a few brief notes in Kaempfer's handwriting appear on the inner front cover (mikaeshi).

Scope and Content

Variant title: Zōji iroha in 増字以呂波韻. Variant title: Iroha zatsuin 以呂波雜韻. Author/compiler: Unknown. Imprint: N. p., Jōkyō 2, 1685. Kanki on fol. 52b of maki 下 reads: 貞享二乙丑歳五月下旬壽梓. Description: 3 kan, 1 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (Maki 上) ff. 54; (中) ff. 50; (下) ff. 52. 194 x 133 mm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 165-170 x 120 mm. Single-line borders with single fishtail design on hanshin. Vertical and horizontal rules dividing each page into 64 squares. Kanji and katakana, with on and kun readings. 8 lines to page, 8 large kanji to line. Original dark blue covers, with original printed title slip on left, within western style cloth binding. Gedai: Shinpan kaisei (tsunogaki) zōji iroha in 新版改正 (角書) 増字以呂波韻. Title from naidai of maki 上. Naidai of maki 中 and 下: Zōeki iroha in 増益以呂波韻. Hashiragaki: Zōeki iroha maki jō (chū, ge) 増益以呂波巻上. (中, 下) + folio no. Edition: Blockprinted editions of Iroha zatsuin (with slight differences of title) were published in Kanbun 4 (1664), Enpō 2 (1674), Enpō 8 (1680), Jōkyō 2 (1685), Jōkyō 5 (1688), Genroku 6 (1693), Genroku 7 (1694), etc. The present copy therefore belongs to the 4th edition. Most editions have a phrase denoting 'enlarged edition' such as Zōho 増補, Zōeki 増益 or Zōji 増字 prefixed to the title as tsunogaki 角書. Contents: A dictionary of tone and rhyme, similar to Shūbun inryaku 聚分韻略, with kanji arranged in iroha order of kun readings.
