    • 1 volume Condition: Fair to good. Some unrepaired worm damage, chiefly in upper margins and at spine, and a few stains. Impression: Fairly sharp and clear, but with some evidence of type wear in places. Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal of Sir Ernest Satow, 英國薩道藏書, on first page of maki 1. Manuscript notes: Kundoku, okurigana in black and kaeriten in red, added throughout text c. Kan'ei period. Signature, Shinkai 深海, also written c. Kan'ei period, at lower right of front cover.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Raigō 賴豪, Shingon monk, 1282-1360. Imprint: N.p., Genna 8, 1622. Kanki on last folio (16b) of maki 2 reads: 元和八年二月吉日起之. Description: Incomplete copy, comprising maki 1 and 2 only (of 6), formerly in 1 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (Maki 1) ff. 19; (maki 2) ff. 16. 28.2 x 18.3 cm. Fukurotoji. Movable type. Printing frame 22.1 x 15.8 cm. (average). Double-line borders. No lines bordering hanshin, and no fishtail design. Kanbun text without printed kunten or reading marks. 10 lines to page, 20 characters to line. Original dark brown front cover, without title slip. Manuscript gedai in an early-Edo hand: 束草集 全 [sic] . Title from naidai at head of maki 1 and 2. Hashiragaki: 束草集 + maki no. + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: The earliest recorded edition, publisher unknown. Followed by another movable type edition published by Nakamura Chōbē 中村長兵衞 in Kan'ei 4 (1627) and by a seihan edition with printed kunten published in Kan'ei 8 (1631). Contents: A Buddhistic work of mixed contents, beginning with dated records (ganmon 願文) of votive offerings of manuscripts, sculptures, bronze castings, etc. to various Buddhist temples.
