    • 1 volume Condition: Fair to good. Some worm damage, carefully repaired by urauchi patching. More extensive worming on front and back covers. Text incomplete, lacking most of maki 中 and 下 (see Description above). Impression: An early impression from unworn blocks, shozuri or near. Seals of ownership: None. Manuscript notes: Three similar pairs of manuscript shikigo, dated respectively Ōchō 1 応長元年 (1311), Shōwa 4 正和四年 (1315) and Enbun 5 延文五年 (1360), appear at the end of maki 上 (transcribed under 'A' below), and following the kanki at end of surviving fragment of maki 下 (transcribed under 'B'). Shikigo are as follows: A. (i) 應長元年九月八日傳領之完尓. (ii) 正和第四乙卯九月十四日裏付之了 (written on verso). (iii) 2-line shikigo in red ink, beginning: 延文五暦八月三日於・・・ . B. (i) Same as A (i) above. (ii) Shikigo in red ink: 延文五年□月廿三日朱點了 朝賢廿二. (iii) On verso, 5-line shikigo hastily written in black ink: ・・・ 正和第四乙卯夷則三日於久米多寺与廿余輩學徒 / 被□之了有打集 / 同第五辰七月八日於藏實寺以校義之暇點之了完尓 / 同九月廿三日於藏實寺校義了 / 學衆五六人云〻己一點直遇之至極也可貴者也定尓. Scope and Content

Variant title: Kegon gokyōshō 華嚴五教章 [華厳五教章]. Variant title: Gokyōshō 五教章. Variant title: Ichijōkyō bunki 一乘教分記 [ 一乗教分記]. Author/compiler: Fazang 法藏, 643-712. Imprint: N.p. [Nara, Tōdaiji 東大寺] , Kōan 6, 1283. Kango on last fold reads: 夫法界宏高圓宗玄邈僅預法席剩企弘通 / 仍勸有緣諸人遂開一部模板庶幾遐方終古 / 流演傳布而已 / 弘安六年癸未九月八日 沙門禪尓謹誌. Description: 3 kan, 1 jō 帖, comprising the whole of maki 上 (50 folds), fragments of maki 中 (last 21 / 2 folds + 1 line, 21 lines in all), and fragments of maki 下 (last 21 / 2 folds + 1 line: 17 lines of main text, 1 line bidai, 4 lines kango). 28.3 x 9.6 cm. (each half-fold). Orihon. Blockprint, on ganpi paper. Printing frame (height) 23 cm. No borders. Kanbun text with manuscript kunten added in Ōchō 1, 1311 (see under manuscript notes below). 5 lines to half-fold, 20 characters to line. Original dark brown covers, with upper part of original handwritten title slip reading: Gokyō [shō] 五教 [章] . Title from naidai. Edition: Tōdaiji-ban. The first recorded edition of this work, and apparently the only edition published earlier than the Edo period. Followed by an edition dated Keichō 17 (1612), printed with movable type. Contents: An exegetical work discussing the doctrines of the Kegongyō (Skt. Avataṃsaka-sūtra, Ch. Huayan-jing) and the critical classification of its five teachings and ten sects. Circulated widely in Japan after its introduction from China in the 8th century. Extant copies are in 3 or 4 kan. The Kegon sect has its headquarters at Tōdaiji.
