Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Tokushō 得勝, also known as Bassui Tokushō 拔隊得勝, Zen monk. 1327-87. Imprint: N.p., Kan'ei 3, 1626. Place of publication not named, but according to Kokatsujiban no kenkyū (p. 771) this was a bōkoku-bon 坊刻本 (a non-monastic, commercial publication). Kanki on fol. 36b of maki 下 reads: 寛永丙寅林鐘日 板開. Description: 3 kan, 1 satsu (originally in 3 satsu), in a blue chitsu case. (Maki 上) ff. 38; (中) ff. 49; (下) ff. 36. 28.5 x 20.3 cm. Fukurotoji. Movable type. Printing frame 23.2 x 17.1 cm. Single-line borders, with 'flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin. Katakana-majiri text without furigana. 10 lines to page, 20 characters to line. Dark brown covers, not original but renewed possibly in mid-Edo period. No title slip or gedai. Title from naidai. Hashiragaki: Wadei 和泥 jō 上 (chū 中, ge 下) + folio no. Edition: The earlier of two movable type editions (1626 and 1627) in which the size of the katakana is as large as the kanji: a rare feature. These two editions were preceded by a Gozan-ban blockprint dated Shitoku 3 至徳三年 (1386), of which the original blocks still survive. Contents: Zen teachings and responses to questions of Zen doctrine by the Rinzai master Bassui Tokushō, founder of the Kōgakuji 向嶽寺 branch of the Rinzai sect at Enzan 鹽山 in Yamanashi-ken. Tokushō's dicta were recorded by his disciples and printed during his lifetime.
