    • 30 volumes Condition: Excellent. A clean copy, free from water stains and worm damage. Impression: Atozuri, from blocks showing marked evidence of wear. All three are ex-libris stamps used by Matsuura Seizan 松浦靜山.

Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 20.3 x 16.1 cm. (average). Single-line borders round text and illustrations. No fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text, with kutōten and a few furigana. 11 lines to page, c. 22 characters to line. Original dark blue covers, with original title slips, centrally placed. Printed gedai: Utsuho monogatari う徒ほ物語 + chapter titles and divisions. No naidai. Hashiragaki: abbreviated title of each maki + maki no. + folio no. Edition: First edition of the complete text of this work, followed by two other blockprinted editions in Bunka 3 (1806) and Bunsei 1 (1818). The order of chapters (maki) in the present edition differs from that in other (manuscript) copies of the work and in the Bunka 3 edition. Most versions begin with Toshikage no maki 俊蔭の巻, whereas the present edition begins with Kura-biraki 藏ひらき and ends with Kuni yuzuri 國ゆつり (see table in Nihon koten bungaku taikei 日本古典文学大系, vol. 12, pp. 4-5). Contents: The Tale of the Hollow Tree. A story dating from the late 10th century concerning the legendary life and adventures of Kiyohara (or Kiyowara) no Toshikage 清原俊蔭 and three succeeding generations of his family. There are allusions to this work in Genii monogatari and Makura no sōshi.
