Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Kitamura Kigin 北村季吟, literary scholar and haikai poet, 1624-1705. Imprint: [Kyōto] , Nakano Kozaemon, Kanbun 1, 1661. Kanki on fol. 41b of maki 下 reads: 寛文元年八月吉日 / 中野小左衛門刋行. Description: 2 kan, 1 satsu, in a box. (Maki 上) ff. 46; (maki 下) ff. 41. 27 x 17.8 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 20.9 x 15.7 cm. (average). Single-line borders. No fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text, with some printed dakuten and kutōten, interspersed with short passages in kanbun containing printed kunten. 11 lines to page, 20-24 characters to line. Dark blue covers, probably original, now discoloured and damaged, with title slip bearing manuscript gedai: 土左日記抄. Title from naidai at head of maki 上 and 下. Hashiragaki: Tosa jō (ge) 土左 上 (下) + folio no. Edition: This is the only known pre-modern edition. Contents: Commentary by Kitamura Kigin on Ki no Tsurayuki's (紀貫之の) Tosa nikki 土佐日記, a diary composed in the 10th century. Commentary completed in Kanbun 1 (1661), the year of publication. Maki 下 ends with a batsu signed by Kigin, dated Manji 4 万治四年 (also=1661).
