Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Fayun 法雲, Chinese monk, 1088-1158. Imprint: N.p., Kan'ei 5, 1628. Kanki following batsu on fol. 58b of maki 7 reads: 維時寛永五戊辰仲冬上旬. Description: 7 kan, 7 satsu, in a slip-case. (1) ff. 2, 2 (序), 59; (2) ff. 57; (3) ff. 51; (4) ff. 55; (5) ff. 59; (6) ff. 62; (7) ff. 58. 27.7 x 19.4 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 22.5 x 17.8 cm. (average). Single-line borders. 6 vertical rules between alternate columns. 'Flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text, with printed okurigana, kaeriten and kutōten. 12 lines to page (double width for characters forming headings), 20 characters to line. Original chestnut-brown covers, with original printed title slips. Gedai: 飜譯名義集. Title from naidai at head and tail of each maki. Hashiragaki: Hon'yaku 翻譯 + maki no. + folio no. Edition: The earliest edition of this work was a Gozan-ban published in Nanbokuchō period (14th century). Two undated movable type editions followed in Keichō (1596-1615) and Kan'ei (1624-44) periods. The present copy belongs to the first blockprinted edition to be published in the Edo period, and the first to contain reading marks. Contents: A collection of names and terms taken from Sanskrit Buddhist literature, transliterated from the Sanskrit into Chinese script, with a detailed explanation of each in kanbun. Terms arranged according to categories. This is Fayun's version of the original dictionary entitled Mahāvyutpatti.
