    • 1 volume Condition: Good. A clean copy generally, only marred by stains on certain folios. Impression: Shozuri. Blocks are virtually unworn. Illustrations: Copiously illustrated with small sumizuri woodcuts, mostly 2 or 4 to the page, depicting armour, helmets, weapons, breastplates and military insignia of all kinds. Each illustration has a descriptive caption. Tobira opposite first page of preface depicts a 3-branched pine with New Year offerings. Seals of ownership: None. Manuscript notes: None in manuscript, but a printed slip has been pasted in at the end of maki 3 announcing a change of address of the publisher Nagata Tōzaburō 永田藤三郎.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Yuasa Tokushi 湯淺得之, writer of preface also. Imprint: Kyōto, Nagata Chōbē, Yao Ichibē; Ōsaka, Kawai Shirōbē, Masuda Shōzaemon, Tenna 4, 1684. Kanki on fol. 41b of maki 4 reads: 天和四甲子暦 / 三月吉旦 / 洛下書林 / 永田長兵衛 / 八尾市兵衛 / 大坂小濱屋 / 川合四郎兵衛 / 同増田庄左衛門 / 板行. Description: 4 kan, formerly in 4 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (1) ff. 9 (序), 30 (maki 1); (2) ff. [1, 序] , 27; (3) ff. 29; (4) ff. 41. 26.8 x 17.5 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 21 x 14.8 cm. (average). Single-line borders. Pages divided into sections by vertical and horizontal rules for most folios bearing text and illustrations together. No printed hanshin. Numbering of maki and folios is printed on inner edge of each leaf. Hiragana-majiri with printed furigana (katakana) for continuous text; katakana-majiri for preface and captions to illustrations. 8 lines to page, 15-18 characters to line. Original light fawn front cover of maki 1 only, embossed with a stylized floral pattern. Original printed title slip, centrally placed, with gedai: 武具訓蒙圖彙 一. No naidai except at head of preface. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: The earliest edition. Contents: A popular illustrated encyclopedia of military clothing and equipment, explained in simple terms. In 4 parts: 胄, 具足着樣, 頰當 and 胴.
