    • 1 volume Condition: Very good, but pages cropped at top and bottom. Impression: Atozuri, from badly worn blocks. A later okuzuke on final endpaper, naming 10 publishers in Edo, Kyōto and Ōsaka, indicates that this copy was printed (from the blocks of Kanbun 5, 1665) not earlier than the beginning of the 19th century. Illustrations: 14 full-page sumizuri woodcuts scattered through maki 上 and 中, showing human figures with acupuncture points marked. Seals of ownership: None.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Hua Shou 滑壽, Chinese physician and medical writer. Imprint: [Ōsaka] , Yamamoto Chōbēnojō, Kanbun 5, 1665. Kanki on fol 5b of maki 下 reads: 寛文五乙巳正月吉祥 / 山本長兵衛尉新刋. Description: 3 kan, 1 satsu, rebound in 1 vol. western style. (Maki 上) ff. 15 (4 prefaces, 凡例, 目録, 2 illustrations, 本文); (maki 中) ff. 50; (maki 下) ff. 5. 25.1 x 18 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 21.2 x 16.5 cm. Single-line borders. Fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text with printed okurigana and kaeriten. 10 lines to page, 22 characters to line. Original light brown front cover only, with original printed title slip on left. Gedai: Shinkan daiji (tsunogaki) jūshikei 新刋大字 (角書) 十四經. Title from naidai at head of each maki. Hashiragaki: Jūshikei jō 十四經上 (chū 中, ge 下) + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: Movable type editions of this work were published in Keichō 1 (1596), Keichō 9 (1604), Genna 4 (1618), and Kan'ei 2 (1625), but the earliest blockprinted edition appears to be that published by Baiju 梅壽 Kan'ei 8 (1631). The present copy is of the second seihan edition, published in Kanbun 5 (1665), with printed kunten as in Baiju's edition. Contents: Japanese edition, without commentary, of a Chinese work on the traditional science and practice of acupuncture, first printed in China in 1341.
