    • 1 volume Condition: Good, apart from soiled corners and a few water stains. Several folios split along fore-edge. Impression: Fairly sharp and clear, but showing some signs of block wear. Illustrations: A total of 19 sumizuri single-page woodcuts, a few partially coloured by hand, 11 in maki 上 and 8 in maki 下. The former are portraits of celebrated poets, with one of their poems above, while the latter depict scenes from poems. Seals of ownership: None. Manuscript notes: Brief note in red ink dated Bunka 10 (1813) beside kanki on last page. Signatures of a former owner, Koitabashi 小板橋, on mikaeshi and inner back cover.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Ichijō Kaneyoshi (=Kanera) 一條兼良, 1402-81. Imprint: Edo, Urokogataya, Enpō 7, 1679. Kanki following batsu on fol. 32b of maki 下 reads: 延寶七己未歳 孟春吉辰 江戸大傳馬三町目 / 鱗形屋板. Description: 2 kan, 1 satsu, in a chitsu case. (Maki 上) ff. 33; (maki 下) ff. 32. 25.4 x 18.5 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 22.6 x 17 cm. (average). Single-line borders. No fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text without furigana. 14-15 lines to page, 26-28 characters to line. Renewed covers of thick, soiled buff paper, without title slip. Manuscript gedai: 歌林良材集. Title from naidai at head of text. Mokurokudai: 謌林良材集. Hashiragaki: Ryōzai jō (ge) 良材 上 (下) + folio no. Edition: Third edition, as recorded in Kokusho sōmokuroku 国書総目録, and possibly the first to contain illustrations. Re-published in Genroku 8 (1695) under the title Karin kin'yōshō 歌林金葉抄 ( q. v.). Contents: A work on poetical theory and the composition of waka poems, with examples drawn from Man'yōshū 萬葉集, Hachidaishū 八代集, Ise monogatari 伊勢物語 and other classical literary works. Compiled c. Eikyō 永享 period, 1429-41.
