    • 1 volume Condition: First and last pages rubbed and paper discoloured, otherwise good. Urauchi backing throughout. Impression: Atozuri, from blocks showing marked signs of wear. Seals of ownership: Red oblong seal, Sōhaku bunko 雙柏文庫 (library of Nakamura Naokatsu), on ff. 1a and 33b. Manuscript notes: Signature (of owner ?), Hirohide 弘秀 + kaō on back endpaper.

Scope and Content

Variant title: Jōei shikimoku 貞永式目. Author/compiler: A corporate compilation, traditionally attributed to Hōjō Yasutoki 北條泰時, 1183-1242. Imprint: N.p., Ozuki Koreharu, Kyōroku 2, 1529. Batsubun on fol. 33b ends: 享禄己丑秋八月 日 / 從四位下行左大史兼筭博士小槻宿祢伊治印. Description: 1 kan, 1 satsu. ff. 33. 26.8 x 20.9 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 21.4 x 18.8 cm. Thick single borders, with fishtail design on hanshin. Vertical rules between lines of text. Kanbun text with printed furigana, okurigana and kaeriten. 7 lines to page, 14 characters to line. Dark brown covers, possibly not original. No title slip. Title from naidai. Hashiragaki: Shikimoku 式目 + folio no. In a modern brocade chitsu case. Edition: Second edition of this work to be printed. The first was published in Daiei 4 大永四年, 1524, without kunten. Both editions issued by Ozuki Koreharu 小槻伊治, whose name appears in both kango. Place of publication not known. A publication of great significance in the history of printing; one of the earliest non-Buddhist works of Japanese authorship to be printed. The next edition was published in Keichō 12, 1607, followed by many further editions all based on those of 1529 and 1607. Contents: An early law code, established by the Kamakura bakufu in Jōei 1 (1232). The first codification and cornerstone of laws regulating military families (bukehō 武家法), which remained dominant from the 13th to 19th centuries. Based on court cases heard by the bakufu.
