    • 6 volumes Condition: Good. Almost free of worm damage, but some water staining in upper and lower margins. Impression: For the most part sharp and clear, but type shows signs of wear in places. Illustrations: Woodcuts of anatomical organs and sketches of the human body, showing acupuncture points, in maki 2, ff. 7, 11, 16-17, 22, 26, 30, 35, 40-41, 45, 54, 60, 62, 64, 77, 84, 103, 104, 106, 126, and in maki 9, ff. 49-50 and 51. All taken over from the Ming edition. Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal of Sir Ernest Satow, 英國薩道藏書, on first page of each satsu. Small oval red seal, Taika 待賈 (seal of Darumaya Goichi 達摩屋五一), beside kanki on last folio of maki 9. Manuscript notes: A few scattered kutōten in red. List of contents repeated in black ink on front cover of each satsu.

Scope and Content

Alternative reading of title: Kōtei naikyō reisū chūshō hatsubi. Author/compiler: Ma Xuantai 馬玄臺, also known as Ma Shi 馬蒔. Imprint: N.p., Baiju 梅壽 (=Baijuken 梅壽軒), Keichō 14, 1609. Kanki on last folio verso of maki 9 reads: 慶長十四己酉年六月朔梅壽刋. Description: 9 kan, formerly in 6 satsu, now reconstituted (in BL) as 6 satsu. (Satsu 1-maki 1) ff. [1] (tobira), 2 (註靈樞經序), 3 (篇目), 5 (刻馬玄臺先生内經靈樞註證發微引),97 (本文); (2-maki 2) ff. 126; (3-maki 3-4) ff. 59, 27; (4-maki 5-6) ff. 38, 46; (5-maki 7-8) ff. 31, 54; (6-maki 9) ff. 78. 28.1 x 20 cm. Fukurotoji. Movable type, except for illustrations and tobira (blockprinted). Printing frame 22 x 16.8 cm. (average). Double-line borders all round. Vertical rules between columns (except in preface and 引). Fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text without printed kunten. 10 lines to page (double for commentary), 22 characters to line. Original light brown front covers of all 6 satsu. Blank title slip on satsu 6; covers of satsu 1-4 and lower part of satsu 5 retain original printed title slips, with gedai: 黃帝内經靈樞註證發微 + maki no. Naidai and gedai identical. Title on blockprinted tobira facing fol. 1 of preface: Koku Ma Gentai sensei daikei reisū chūshō hatsubi 刻馬玄臺先生内經靈樞註證發微. Hashiragaki: Reisū 靈樞 + maki no. + folio no. Edition: The only movable type edition of this work. Published by Baijuken 梅壽軒, who, in succession to Itokudō 醫德堂, was responsible for publishing many works on medicine and pharmacy in the early Edo period. Most of them, including the present work, were new reprints of Ming editions, as attested by the imprint on the tobira bearing the date Wanli 16 (1588), which reads: 萬曆戊子孟春寶命堂梓. Contents: Commentary on the Lingshu 靈樞, one of the earliest Chinese medical treatises, dealing primarily with internal medicine and acupuncture.
