Scope and Content

Variant title: Hanju-zanmai gyōdō ōjōsan 般舟讃昧行道往生讃. Author/compiler: Shandao 善導 (Japanese: Zendō), Chinese monk, 613-81. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [printed late-Kamakura period, c. 1300-30] . No kanki. Description: 1 kan, 1 jō. ff. [32] . Folios unnumbered. Incomplete copy: several folios are missing at beginning and end. Collation with printed version in Shichiso shōgyō 七祖聖教 confirms this. 25.3 x 15.5 cm. Detchō binding. Blockprint. Printing frame 22 x 12.8 cm. Thick ganpi (hishi) paper, printed on both sides. No borders or vertical rules. Kanbun text, with manuscript okurigana, kunten and kaeriten, some in black ink, some in red. 6 lines to page, 17 characters to line. Light brown covers (slightly rubbed) renewed in early Edo period. No title slip. No gedai or naidai. Title partly ascertainable from a faintly visible 'san' 讃 under pasted edge of some of the inner folds. Book formerly identified (incorrectly) by the vendor as Ōjō raisan 往生禮讃. Edition: Earliest Japanese edition was published in Jōei 1 貞永元年 (1232).. This copy is clearly a Jōdokyō-ban, but in the absence of a colophon, and without any basis for comparison with the Jōei 1 edition, it is impossible to date it more accurately than late-Kamakura period. Contents: A collection of 7-line verses (san 讃=ge 偈, gāthā) on Jōdo doctrine and in praise of the Buddha, preceded by a preface and followed by an endnote (missing from this copy), all composed by the Chinese monk Shandao of the Tang period. A work designed to promote the practice of meditation (hanju-zanmai 般舟讃昧=pratyutpanna-samādhi) to invoke the presence of Amida Buddha.
