    • 1 volume Condition: Good. Some folios slightly soiled at lower corners, but otherwise a clean copy. Impression: Slightly atozuri, but not markedly so. Illustrations: A total of 4 double-page sumizuri illustrations, 2 in maki 上 and 2 in maki 下. Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal in a double frame, Fukuda bunko 福田文庫 (seal of Fukuda Keien 福田敬園) on first page of maki 上 and 下. Manuscript notes: Note in black ink dated Bunkyū 2 (1862) on mikaeshi of maki 上 reads as follows: 文久二戌年十月廿八日收得之 / 小本にも有之カツシ本にも有之事 / 但三人物語とは別也 / 桃柳舎 / 主人.

Scope and Content

Variant title: Sannin-bōshi 三人ぼうし. Author/compiler: Unknown. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [c. Kanbun period, 1661-73 ?] . No colophon. Description: 2 kan, 2 satsu, in a chitsu case. (Maki 上) ff. 12 (numbering begins with fol. 2); (maki 下) ff. 11 (as above). 26.9 x 18.7 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 22.2 x 17.2 cm. (average). Single-line borders. No fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text, with printed dakuten and kutōten. 16 lines to page, 26-28 characters to line. Original yellow covers decorated with a printed diagonal maze pattern with coiled dragons. Original printed title slips on left bearing gedai: E-iri (tsunogaki) sannin hōshi 繪入 (角書) 三人ほうし. Naidai at head of each maki: Sannin-bōshi 三人ぼうし. Hashiragaki: 三人ほうし 上 (下) + folio no. Edition: An undated edition, without publisher's name, believed to date from Kanbun 寛文 period. (A copy in Seikadō Bunko, also ascribed to Kanbun period, was published by Yamamoto Kyūzaemon 山本九左衞門). Earlier editions were published in Kan'ei period (1624-44), one of them modelled on a movable type edition, the other a tanroku-bon; and in Shōhō 3 (1646), Meireki 4 (1658) and Manji 2 (1659). Among all these editions, beginning with the tanroku-bon, the text hardly differs. Contents: A tale of the Muromachi period (Muromachi jidai monogatari 室町時代物語), formerly classed as otogi-zōshi.
