    • 1 volume Condition: Fair to good. Some yellow stains and burn-holes on ff. 3-4 of maki 18 repaired by urauchi patching. Impression: Atozuri, from worn blocks. Illustrations: Sumizuri woodcuts on every page depicting natural phenomena and manmade objects, two to each page (4 per folio). Manuscript notes: Illustrations numbered throughout by Kaempfer, and many names of plants transliterated in roman script in black or red ink, also in Kaempfer's hand. Manuscript note on paper slip pasted to front cover: A Japanese pictorial encyclopedia. Duplicate of the 7th and 8th volumes. Old shelfmark, Pr: Or. 12, on mikaeshi.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Nakamura Tekisai 中村愓齋, Confucian scholar, 1629-1702. Imprint: N. p., n.d. (preface dated Kanbun 6 寛文丙午, 1666). No colophon. See under Edition below. Description: Incomplete copy, comprising maki 16-20 only, bound in 1 satsu. 269 x 193 mm. In a buckram box. Edition: An undated edition in 8 satsu, probably published c. Enpō-Jōkyō period, 1673-1688. Contents: A popular illustrated encyclopedia, the first of its kind in Japan, consisting chiefly of illustrations with a minimum of text.
