Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Unknown. Possibly Asai Ryōi 淺井了意, d. 1691. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [c. Kanbun / Enpō period, 1661-81 ?] . No colophon. Description: Each 1 kan, 1 satsu, in a chitsu case. (Satō Fujiō 佐藤ふぢわう) ff. 4; (Engaku shōnin 緣覺上人) ff. 10. 26.9 x 18.5 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 22.8 x 17 cm. (average). Single-line borders. No fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text, with printed furigana and dakuten. 15 lines to page, c. 30 characters to line. Original mid-blue covers, somewhat damaged. Title slip missing, hence no gedai. Title from naidai and bidai of each work. Hashiragaki: (1) Sa 佐, (2) Kaku 覚 + folio no. Edition: Uncertain whether this copy was issued as a separate publication, or formed part of a complete edition of Yamato nijūshi kō (see Contents below). If this is a stray volume from a set of Yamato nijūshi kō, it does not belong to the Karasuma edition (12 lines to page), nor to the Yoshinoya 吉野屋 edition (see 16052.f.14). It seems reasonable to assign the present copy to c. Kanbun 寛文 or Enpō 延宝 period. Contents: Two stories from the kana-zōshi collection Yamato nijūshi kō 大倭二十四孝, authorship attributed to Asai Ryōi. In a complete set, the two brief biographies of Satō Fujiō 佐藤ふぢわう and Engaku Shōnin 緣覺上人 are contained in maki 9 and 10.
