    • 1 volume Condition: Very good. Impression: Last page shozuri (from re-cut blocks ?), ff. 1-16 atozuri from worn blocks. Illustrations: Six sumizuri illustrations, 4 double-page (mihiraki) on ff. 3b-4a, 6b-7a, 12b-13a and 15b-16a, and 2 single-page on ff. 9a and 10a. Seals of ownership: Octagonal British Museum stamp, MVSEVM BRITANNICVM, on fol. 3b. Manuscript notes: Note on mikaeshi: Ancient Chinese History / Examined by Chetqua Decr. 17. 1770. No notes in Kaempfer's hand.

Variant title: Hachinoki はちの木. Author/compiler: Unknown. Imprint: [Kyōto] , Shōhon'ya Kyūbē, Enpō 8, 1680. Kanki on fol. 17a reads: 延宝八庚申年八月吉日太夫座之正本. (Publisher's name appears on title slip.). Description: 1 kan, 1 satsu, formerly bound in western style together with nos. 496, 500, 630. ff. 3-17 (ff. 1-2 missing). 219 x 158 mm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 195 x 150 mm (average). Single-line borders. Fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text, with printed dakuten and kutōten. 18 lines to page, variable no. of characters to line. Original black covers embossed with a lattice and peony design. Original printed title slip on left with gedai and details of publisher, reading (in part) : 新板 (角書) さのゝ源左衛門なさけの ／ はちの木 ／ 直傳寫 ／ 正本屋 ／ 九兵衛. Title from naidai on fol. 3a. Hashiragaki: Sano さの + folio no. Edition: The only surviving dated edition of 17th century. Contents: Text of an early jōruri (ko-jōruri 古浄瑠璃) dramatic narrative.
