Author/compiler: Tianru Weize 天如維則, original author, 1286-1354. Zhuhong 袾宏, editor, 1535-1612. Kōshin 廣信, Japanese Jōdo monk, commentator, mid-17th century. Imprint: [Kyōto] , Hinoya Hanbē, Kanaya Han'emon, Tenna 3, 1683. Kanki on fol. 51b reads: 天和癸亥三稔正月穀旦 / 日野屋半兵衛 / 金屋半右衞門 / 板行. Description: 1 kan, 1 satsu, rebound in western style. ff. 1 (list of works consulted 書引目録), 51. 26.9 x 19 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 23.8-24.4 x 17.6 cm. Single-line borders. Inner single borders, 17.1 × 14.9 cm., surrounding main text. No fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text, with printed kunten, okurigana and kaeriten. 10 lines to page (large characters of main text), 22 lines (smaller characters of commentary); 17 characters to line (large characters), 32 (smaller characters). Renewed mid-blue covers, with embossed floral pattern. Renewed title slip with manuscript gedai: 浄土或問. Title from original Chinese preface, fol. 2a. Title at head of text, fol. 4a: Shinkoku jōdo wakumon 新刻浄土或問. Hashiragaki: Wakumon shinchū 或問新註 + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: First edition to be published with commentary, a second following in Genroku 3, 1690. Other editions, printed in Jōō 2 (1653) and An'ei 3 (1774), contained main text without commentary. Contents: Text of the Chinese Pure Land work Jingtu huowen, dealing in question and answer form with controversial points of Jōdo doctrine, with an extensive commentary by the Japanese monk Kōshin. The original text is printed in larger script, within frames, on each page. The commentary is printed above and beside it.
