    • 1 volume Condition: Very good. A list of artists' names indexed in Honchō gain 本朝畫印, written in pencil in rōmaji, has been inserted before that maki. The same names are pencilled in upper margins. Impression: Atozuri from moderately worn blocks. Illustrations: One single-page sumizuri woodcut of a garden and teahouse on the first (unnumbered) folio of appendix, Honchō gain. Seals of ownership: Large square red seal, Kairakudō 偕樂堂 (seal of Miyake Yasuyoshi 三宅康保), on first page of each maki.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Kanō Einō 狩野永納, also known as Ichiyōsai 一陽齋 and Kyoō 居翁, 1631-97. Imprint: [Kyōto] , Yoshinoya Sōbē, Maruya Genbē, Genroku 6, 1693. Kanki on fol. 25b of last maki reads: 元禄六癸酉年 / 十二月吉辰 / 吉野屋惣兵衛 / 丸屋源兵衛. Description: 5 kan + supplementary maki headed Honchō gain 本朝畫印, formerly in 6 satsu, rebound in 1 satsu Japanese style. (Maki 1) ff. 5 (序), 3 (自序), 3 (hanrei 凡例), 2 (総目録), 7 (本文); (maki 2) ff. 45; (3) ff. 41; (4) ff. 24; (5) ff. 28; (suppl. 本朝畫印) ff. [1] , 25. 22.1 x 15.7 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 18.3 x 14.2 cm. (average). Single-line borders. Fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text, with printed okurigana and kaeriten. Batsu on ff. 24-25 of supplementary vol. printed in gyōsho. Hanrei in katakana-majiri. 8 lines to page, 15 characters to line. Renewed dark maroon covers, but retaining original printed title slip. Gedai: 本朝畫史. Naidai similar. Hashiragaki: Honchōga 本朝畫 + maki no. + folio no. Edition: The first and only dated pre-Meiji edition published under this title. Preceded by an edition of Genroku 4 (1691) under the title Honchō gaden 本朝畫傳. Contents: The earliest printed history of painting in Japan, comprising a brief introduction on its origins, biographical sketches of 405 artists, and an annotated list of signatures and seals of notable painters in a supplementary volume entitled Honcho gain 本朝畫印. First preface dated Enpō 6 (1678) by Hayashi Gahō 林鵞峰, second preface and batsu by the author, signed Ichiyōsai Kyoō 一陽齋居翁.
